Hanisch Bakery & Coffee Shop Mural
This super fun mural had been in the works since winter of 2023. It all started with Billy the Bun Man Hanisch reaching out to me to create a mural in what would be his new bakery expansion in Red Wing, Minnesota.
A year past, and in October of 2024, Billy reached back out and said, "It's time, let's do this." So I began the sketching process to create a mural that would welcome guests into one of Minnesota's best bakeries.
The remodel took at least three years that I know of to complete. Many aspects of the project had to be started and finished before my work could begin. You'd have to ask Billy how long the process actually took (I'm sure my three year timeline is way off).
The mural would be located behind the bakery displays that would house hundreds of donuts, cookies, and tons of other baked goodness. It would be a bright, bold backdrop of the bakery's expansion.
It was very important that the mural would be painted directly on the existing brick wall with all of its amazing texture and flaws. Billy wanted a hand-made feel to the overall mural and painting directly on the brick surface would help to enhance and drive home the idea that everything that is made at Hanisch Bakery is made by hand by real people.
Painting on brick can be very difficult. This wall was no exception. First the brick was sealed up with a clear masonry primer. The mural was painted with exterior paints and then clear coated with three generous coats of a spar varnish that locked the paints to the wall.
The subject matter included Billy the Bun Man, the Bakery's mascot, Poppin' Fresh, Paul Bunyan, breads, cakes, donuts, and cookies. Red Wing's famous Bluff was topped into a sugary frosting with the Spoon and Cherry's cherry.
Thanks so much to Billy and the rest of the Hanisch Bakery crew for a super fun project and making myself and my daughter, who helped me on this project, feel right at home. You make a heck of a great donut, that we enjoyed everyday on site!
