In Norse mythology, there is a Midgard or world serpent named Jörmungandr. This serpent dwells in the world sea, encircling the Earth (Midgard) and biting its own tail. The tree is known as Yggdrasil. Odin's ravens, Hugin and Munin sit perched guarding the sacred tree. More on Jörmungandr here.
